Savoy Castle (Gressoney-Saint-Jean)

Savoy Castle, known locally as Castel Savoia or Château Savoie, is a historic residence located in Gressoney-Saint-Jean within the Aosta Valley region of Italy. Situated near the village of Òbre Biel in the scenic Lys Valley, the structure was commissioned by Queen Margherita of Savoy. Fascinated by the natural beauty of the area during previous stays at the nearby Villa Margherita, the Queen decided to establish her own permanent residence there. The project was designed by the Italian architect Emilio Stramucci, with construction taking place between 1899 and 1904. The first stone was officially laid on August 24, 1899, marking the beginning of this significant royal undertaking.

Architecturally, the castle is a three-storey eclectic villa distinguished by the presence of five towers. The interior layout was strictly hierarchical; the ground floor contained living quarters, the noble floor housed the royal apartments, and the second floor was reserved for gentlemen of the court. The extensive property includes several additional structures, such as the Villa Belvedere and the Romitaggio Carducci. In 1981, the Aosta Valley region acquired the estate, ensuring its preservation as a public heritage site. Today, the castle grounds are also home to the Savoy Castle Alpine Botanical Garden, adding scientific and educational value to the historic location.

The site stands as a testament to the House of Savoy's connection to the Alpine region and remains a key cultural landmark in Gressoney-Saint-Jean. Its eclectic design reflects the architectural tastes of the late nineteenth century, blending various stylistic elements into a cohesive royal retreat.
