Santa Maria di Sala

Santa Maria di Sala is a town located in the Metropolitan City of Venice within the Veneto region of northern Italy. Situated at an elevation of 13 meters, the municipality covers an area of nearly 28 square kilometers and includes several frazioni such as Caltana and Sant'Angelo. While often referred to in the context of castles due to its historic architecture, the settlement is technically a comune crossed by the SP32 provincial road. It serves as a residential hub with a population exceeding sixteen thousand residents, maintaining strong cultural ties to its surrounding landscape and neighboring communities.

The most significant historical landmark in the town is Villa Farsetti, a grand estate originally owned by the Farsetti family, who were members of the Venetian nobility. The property underwent a major transition in 1807 when it was purchased by Conte Demetrio de Mircovich following the death of the last Farsetti heir in Saint Petersburg. Under Demetrio's ownership, the villa experienced a period of renewed prosperity and historical importance, as he donated the building and its guest house to serve as the first seat of the new municipal government. This act cemented the villa's role as the administrative and cultural heart of the community during the nineteenth century.

Today, Villa Farsetti remains under the ownership of the Santa Maria di Sala Municipality and continues to serve a vital public function. The historic structure currently houses various municipal offices, including the town library, and acts as a venue for numerous cultural events. This adaptive reuse ensures the preservation of the building while keeping it accessible to the public. Beyond its local significance, the town has expanded its international connections through a town twinning agreement established in 2009 with Hvar, Croatia, reflecting its ongoing engagement with broader European cultural networks.
