Sandeman Fort
wikipedia

Sandeman Fort is a historic military installation located in Zhob, Balochistan, Pakistan. Constructed in 1890 under the orders of Sir Robert Groves Sandeman, who led British military campaigns in the region, the fortress was built from limestone on high ground overlooking the town. Its unique architectural design has often been compared to the shape of a ship, serving a dual purpose of defense and surveillance over the local population. The complex originally included accommodations for the garrison and officers, with a specific residence known locally as the "castle" serving as the home for Sandeman and subsequent political agents during the colonial era.

Following Pakistan's independence, the fort transitioned into an administrative hub, functioning as the residence and office for the Assistant Commissioner of Zhob District. In 1976, President Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto visited the site and officially renamed the city from Fort Sandeman to Zhob. Recognizing its cultural value, the State of Balochistan declared the structure a protected historical heritage site. In 2019, an agreement was reached with the Walled City of Lahore Authority to restore the fort and its associated buildings, necessitating the relocation of government offices to facilitate public access.

Today, Sandeman Fort serves as a museum, preserving artifacts from the colonial period, including original furniture and Sandeman's personal piano. While the restoration aimed to revitalize the landmark for tourism and education, the process sparked debate among historians and locals. Concerns were raised that the original fabric of the building was being demolished and replaced without adequate oversight by professional archaeologists, leading to fears that the restoration might distort the site's authentic historical character despite the intention to preserve it.
