San Quirico

San Quirico is a historic village located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, specifically within the province of Grosseto. Administratively serving as a frazione of the comune of Sorano, it sits at an elevation of 486 meters in the distinctive tuff landscape of southern Maremma. The settlement is strategically positioned along the Provincial Road connecting Sorano to Casone, approximately 85 kilometers from Grosseto and just 5 kilometers from Sorano itself. With a population recorded at 572 in 2001 and 476 in 2011, the community maintains its identity as a small but significant hub in this picturesque area of the Italian countryside.

The village holds unique historical significance as it emerged following the depopulation of the nearby medieval town of Vitozza, whose evocative ruins now stand as a major archaeological site adjacent to the modern settlement. Formerly known as San Quirichino, the village developed as residents relocated from the declining older town. The architectural character of San Quirico is defined by its religious structures, most notably the parish church of Santi Quirico e Giulitta. Originally established as the main parish in 1785, this building was extensively restructured in the early twentieth century, adopting a refined Neo-Classical style that replaced earlier forms. Additionally, the nearby hamlet of Montignano features a small nineteenth-century chapel built in 1845, further enriching the local cultural heritage.

Today, San Quirico remains a quiet residential village that serves as a gateway to the historical mysteries of the Vitozza ruins. Its location within the tuff area offers visitors a glimpse into the geological and human history of the Maremma region. While primarily a living community rather than a commercial tourist center, its proximity to significant archaeological sites and its well-preserved Neo-Classical church make it a point of interest for those exploring the lesser-known corners of Tuscany. The village continues to honor its past while functioning as an integral part of the Sorano municipality.
