Buccinasco

Buccinasco is a municipality located in the Metropolitan City of Milan within the Lombardy region of Italy, situated approximately seven kilometers southwest of Milan. While the modern comune was officially formed in 1841 through the merger of several smaller hamlets including Buccinasco Castello and Rovido, its most prominent historical landmark is the Visconti Castle. This fortress was originally constructed in the late 14th century and underwent significant renovations during the 15th and 16th centuries. The castle represents a key example of medieval military architecture in the area, reflecting the influence of the powerful Visconti family who dominated much of northern Italy during that era. Alongside the castle, the town also features the Villa Durini-Borromeo, a notable residence dating back to the 16th century.

Historically, Buccinasco functioned primarily as an agricultural center until the mid-20th century. The demographic and economic landscape shifted dramatically after the 1950s due to substantial immigration from southern Italy. This influx caused the hamlet of Romano Banco to surpass the older settlements in population, eventually becoming the main industrial and administrative hub of the municipality. Today, Buccinasco is a thriving urban community with a population exceeding 27,000 residents. Although it has evolved into a modern industrial zone, the town retains its historical roots through its preserved architectural sights. The Visconti Castle remains a significant cultural symbol, standing as a testament to the area's feudal past amidst contemporary development.
