Rzucewo Castle

Rzucewo Castle, also known as Jan III Sobieski Castle, is a historic landmark located in the village of Rzucewo within the Pomeranian Voivodeship of northern Poland. Situated in Puck County near the Baltic coast, the site holds deep historical roots, having been owned by Pomeranian Dukes prior to 1308. Over the centuries, it served as a prestigious residence for several notable aristocratic families, including the Wejher and Radziwill clans. The location is perhaps most famous for its association with King John III Sobieski, one of Poland's most celebrated monarchs, who used the estate as a royal residence.

The current structure dates back to 1840, when it was founded by Gustav von Below and designed by the renowned Prussian architect Friedrich August Stüler. This iteration of the castle remained in the von Below family until the end of World War II in 1945. Following the communist takeover of the region, the property underwent a significant change in function, initially serving as an agricultural school. This period marked a departure from its aristocratic past, reflecting the broader political shifts occurring across post-war Eastern Europe.

After undergoing extensive refurbishments lasting two years, the castle was transformed into a luxury hotel in 1994, a role it continues to fulfill today. Now operating under the name Sobieski Castle Hotel, the building has been restored to highlight its architectural grandeur and historical significance. It stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in Pomerania, offering visitors a chance to experience its rich heritage while enjoying modern amenities. The site remains a testament to the region's complex history, blending medieval origins with nineteenth-century architectural elegance.
