Ruine Klingenstein /Salla
Ruine Klingenstein, also historically known as Burg Salla, is a medieval hill castle ruin situated in the market town of Maria Lankowitz in Western Styria, Austria. Perched on a narrow, wooded mountain ridge approximately 900 meters west of the village of Salla, the site commands a strategic position overlooking the Sallabach valley. The fortress was constructed after 1420, likely during the second half of the 15th century, making it a relatively late addition to the region's defensive architecture. Built primarily from irregular quarry stone masonry using locally sourced marble, the castle was originally designed to protect a vital trade route connecting Voitsberg over the Gaberl pass to the upper Murtal valley.
The historical ownership of the castle is only partially documented due to a scarcity of written records, though it is believed the Counts of Montfort may have been its original builders. By the 16th century, possession had passed to the noble families of Saurau and Glojach. The structure likely met its end when it was destroyed by fire during the 16th century and was subsequently abandoned without reconstruction. For centuries, the site remained a ruin until the early 1980s, when the former mayor of Salla initiated rebuilding efforts. These modern interventions, which included some new constructions rather than strict restoration, remain a subject of controversy among architectural historians and researchers.
Today, Ruine Klingenstein stands as a preserved historical landmark consisting of a core castle and western fortifications. While three archaeological excavations have been conducted, they have not covered the entire area, leaving many details about the original layout and specific building functions to speculation. The ruins are currently accessible via a forest path branching off from the Gaberl Straße. Despite the incomplete scientific understanding of its internal design, the site offers significant insight into late medieval defensive strategies in Styria and serves as a tangible reminder of the region's feudal past and trade history.
