Royal Palace

The Royal Palace, known locally as Slottet, stands as the official residence of the Norwegian monarch in the heart of Oslo. Situated at the western end of the famous Karl Johans gate, the building is surrounded by the expansive Palace Park and faces the Palace Square. Constructed in the Neoclassical architectural style, the project was commissioned by King Charles III John, formerly Charles XIV John of Sweden and Norway, who selected the site in 1821. The design was entrusted to the Danish-born architect Hans Linstow. Although construction commenced in 1825 with the laying of the foundation stone, the project faced significant delays due to budget overruns and political tensions regarding the union between Sweden and Norway. Work halted in 1827 before resuming in 1833 with a modified, more cost-effective design that omitted originally planned projecting wings. The massive structure was finally completed on July 26, 1849.

Historically, the palace replaced Paléet, a townhouse that had served as the temporary royal residence and viceroy quarters during previous unions with Denmark. While earlier monarchs used the city only for frequent visits, the Royal Palace marked a shift toward a permanent royal presence in the capital. King Haakon VII became the first monarch to reside there permanently following Norway's full independence. Today, the building remains the primary home of King Harald V, while the Crown Prince resides at Skaugum in nearby Asker. The complex features 173 rooms and continues to serve as a central venue for state functions and official ceremonies.

The site is also notable for its daily changing of the guard, performed by the Royal Guardsmen, which has become a popular attraction for visitors. Despite the financial struggles and political disputes that plagued its early construction phases, the palace stands as a enduring symbol of Norwegian sovereignty and royal heritage. Its strategic location and grand facade make it a focal point of the national capital, bridging the city's commercial main street with the serene greenery of the Palace Park.
