Frogner Manor

Frogner Manor is a historic estate located in the Frogner borough of Oslo, Norway, serving as the namesake for the surrounding district. Originally one of the largest agricultural properties in the region, the site dates back to the Middle Ages when it was ecclesiastical property before being confiscated by the Crown in 1532. The current manor house was constructed in 1750 by Major Hans Jacob Scheel, who transformed an existing log structure into a representative residence. The architecture reflects a blend of practical timber framing and Baroque influences, featuring four wings arranged around a square courtyard with a grand porte-cochère. Scheel cleverly concealed the original log walls with brick infill and white-washed plaster to mimic solid masonry, adding a central wall dormer to create a symmetrical facade facing a formal garden.

The estate holds significant historical importance as a summer residence for Norway's elite during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1790, it was purchased by Bernt Anker, the wealthiest person in Norway at the time, and his wife Mathia Collett. They famously hosted weekly gatherings for the Christiania upper class, necessitating architectural expansions such as a large banquet hall to accommodate guests. Following ownership by various wealthy officials and burghers, the municipality acquired the property in 1896 to facilitate urban expansion and establish a new cemetery. Today, the remaining grounds form part of the public Frogner Park, situated near the famous Vigeland sculpture installation.

Currently, the 18th-century buildings of Frogner Manor house the Oslo City Museum, preserving the cultural heritage of the capital. While much of the original vast estate was developed into residential areas or parkland, the manor itself remains intact as a key historical landmark. Its evolution from a medieval farm to a luxurious country seat for the rich, and finally to a public museum, illustrates the changing social and urban landscape of Oslo over several centuries.
