Royal Castle of Laeken
The Royal Castle of Laeken, also known as the Palace of Laeken, serves as the official residence of the King and Queen of the Belgians and the broader Belgian royal family. Situated in the Laeken district of the City of Brussels within the Brussels-Capital Region, the estate lies approximately five kilometers north of the city center. The address is located on Avenue du Parc Royal, accessible via the nearby Stuyvenbergh metro station. Originally commissioned by Duchess Maria Christina of Austria and Prince Albrecht of Saxony-Teschen, the structure was formerly known as the Palace of Schonenberg before becoming the primary seat of the Belgian monarchy.
Construction of the palace began in 1782 under the direction of architect Charles de Wailly and structural engineer Louis Montoyer, though the complex saw various additions and modifications continuing until 1909. The building is a distinguished example of Neoclassical and Neo-Palladian architectural styles, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of late 18th-century European royalty. Owned by the Belgian state but occupied by the reigning monarchs, the castle functions as both a private home and a venue for official state duties. Unlike some other royal residences that are fully open to the public, Laeken remains an active working palace, with access generally restricted to specific times or special occasions such as the annual garden parties.
Historically, the site has been central to the Belgian monarchy since the country's independence, hosting generations of royal residents. The surrounding parklands are notable for containing the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken, an impressive glass complex often associated with the castle grounds. While the interior is not regularly open for general tourism, the exterior and gardens represent a significant cultural landmark in Brussels. The residence continues to symbolize the continuity of the Belgian monarchy, blending historical grandeur with its modern role as the administrative and domestic hub for the royal family.
