Rullingen Castle

Rullingen Castle, known locally as Kasteel van Rullingen, is a historic fortress situated in the village of Kuttekoven within the municipality of Borgloon in the province of Limburg, Belgium. The estate occupies a highly scenic position in the valley of the Herk river. While the site dates back to the medieval era, with the first recorded lord being Eggebert van Ruelingen, a vassal of Arnold II, Count of Loon, in the early twelfth century, the current structure largely reflects a reconstruction from the 1630s. During this period, it was redesigned as a typical moated castle characteristic of the Meuse valley region, although the defensive moat has since been filled in during more recent times.

The castle's history includes significant challenges, most notably a serious fire in 1920 that destroyed a portion of the building. Extensive reconstruction efforts were undertaken between 1921 and 1935 to restore the property to its former glory. Following these restorations, the castle was acquired by the government of the province of Belgian Limburg. Today, the site has been repurposed for commercial use and currently operates as a hotel, allowing visitors to experience its historical ambiance. Despite the loss of its original water defenses and the damage sustained in the twentieth century, Rullingen Castle remains an important architectural landmark in the region, representing centuries of local nobility and adaptive reuse.
