Royal Castle

Săvârșin Castle, historically known as Forray Castle, is a prominent country house located within the Royal Domain of Săvârșin in Arad County, Romania. Originally constructed between 1650 and 1680 for the Hungarian noble Count Forray András, the structure has undergone significant transformations, including a major renovation in the late nineteenth century and a comprehensive restoration completed in October 2015. The building showcases a distinct Neoclassical architectural style, reflecting the elegance of its various eras of development. Although an earlier iteration of the building was demolished in 1781, the current estate stands as a testament to centuries of architectural evolution and noble heritage in the region.

The castle holds profound historical significance as the official countryside residence of the Romanian Royal Family. It was restituted to King Michael I and Queen Anne, who established a tradition of spending their Christmas holidays at the estate, a custom continued by Princess Margareta, the Custodian of the Romanian Crown. Beyond its role as a private home, the castle serves as the formal location where statutes defining the powers and roles of the royal family are signed, cementing its status as a center of dynastic administration. The property includes a private park spanning 6.5 hectares, which was personally owned by King Michael until his death in 2017.

In recent years, the estate has transitioned toward partial public access while maintaining its royal function. Since 2021, the castle grounds and King Michael's notable collection of World War II Jeeps have been open to visitors during the summer months. This initiative allows the public to engage with the site's rich history and royal legacy. Following extensive restoration efforts led by architects such as Serban Sturdza and Augustin Ioan, the castle remains in excellent condition, serving both as a preserved historical monument and a living symbol of the Romanian monarchy's enduring presence in the country's cultural landscape.
