Turulung

Turulung is not a castle but a commune located in Satu Mare County, in northern Romania. Situated at an altitude of 133 meters on the banks of the Tur River, it lies approximately 27 kilometers northeast of the county seat, Satu Mare. The commune comprises three villages: Drăgușeni, Turulung, and Turulung-Vii. It serves as a key transit point, crossed by national road DN1C, which is part of the European route E58 connecting Cluj-Napoca to the Ukrainian border at Halmeu. The area has been inhabited for centuries, with population records dating back to 1880, reflecting a diverse cultural heritage primarily composed of Hungarian, Romanian, and Roma communities.

The historical significance of Turulung stems from its long-standing multi-ethnic character rather than any fortified structure. Census data over the last century shows a fluctuating but consistent presence of Hungarians, who often form the majority, alongside significant Romanian and Roma populations, and a smaller German community. This demographic blend is mirrored in its local administration; notably, the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania currently holds a leading role in the local council as of the 2024 elections. The commune's name appears in various languages, including Hungarian as Túrterebes and Rusyn as Туртеребеш, highlighting its position in a culturally rich border region.

Today, Turulung functions as an active administrative and residential unit with a population of roughly 3,409 people as of the 2021 census. There is no castle or medieval fortress within its boundaries; instead, the locality is defined by its rural landscape and strategic location near international transport routes. The commune maintains its own local government and website, focusing on the governance and development of its constituent villages. Its condition is that of a living, evolving community rather than a preserved historical monument, offering insight into the daily life and demographic shifts of northern Transylvania over the past 150 years.
