Rottenegg Castle

Rottenegg Castle is a historic ruined fortress located in Upper Austria, situated near the village of Rottenegg within the municipality of Sankt Gotthard im Mühlkreis. Approximately fourteen kilometers northwest of Linz, the structure stands on a dramatic rock promontory overlooking the confluence of the Kleinen Rodl and Großen Rodl rivers. Originally constructed around 1289 using stone, the castle was strategically built to guard an important medieval trade route passing through the region. Its name, which translates to red corner, likely references the color of the local rock or decorative paint once applied to its corners.

The site holds significant historical value, with its first documented mention occurring in 1285 regarding the Piber family, who owned the property until 1340. Over the following centuries, ownership transferred through various noble lines, including the Landenberg and Wallsee families, before being acquired by Count Starhemberg in 1712. Following this acquisition, the castle was managed from a nearby domain and gradually fell into disrepair as it housed poorer residents without adequate maintenance. Architecturally, the complex evolved from a four-story defensive tower into a stately residence during the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, featuring an integrated donjon topped with an onion dome, a grand chapel, and elaborate stucco decorations.

Today, Rottenegg Castle exists as a ruin where internal floors and joists have completely collapsed, leaving only the outer walls and window frames standing. Despite its dilapidated condition, visitors can still observe traces of original paintings and sophisticated stucco work that hint at its former elegance as a comfortable noble house. While the surrounding farm buildings and perimeter walls have vanished entirely, the gatehouse remains largely intact, albeit modernized. The site serves as a tangible reminder of the region's feudal past and the architectural transitions from military fortification to residential manor before its eventual decline in the eighteenth century.
