Robbio

Robbio is a historic municipality located in the Province of Pavia within the Lombardy region of Italy, situated approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Milan. While often associated with a castle, the site known as Castello di Robbio is a medieval structure that originally served as a feudal stronghold. The area has been inhabited since Neolithic times and was later established as a Roman center called Redobium. Throughout the Middle Ages, it changed hands between the Lombards, the Diocese of Vercelli, and the influential De Robbio family before definitively becoming a possession of Pavia in 1220 under Emperor Frederick II.

The architectural heritage of Robbio reflects its long history, though specific construction dates for the castle are not detailed in available records. The fortress itself has undergone a significant transformation and no longer functions as a private residence or military garrison. Instead, the medieval castle grounds have been repurposed into a public park, serving as a green space for the local community and visitors. Today, it remains an active comune with a population of over six thousand residents. The town is also recognized as the birthplace of Silvio Piola, a celebrated Italian soccer player. While the castle does not retain its original defensive appearance, its evolution from a noble seat to a communal park highlights the changing social fabric of this ancient Italian town.
