Riegersburg Castle

Riegersburg Castle is a formidable medieval hill castle located in Riegersburg, within the Austrian state of Styria. Perched atop an extinct volcanic neck at an elevation of 482 meters, the structure utilizes ancient basalt from the hill itself in its construction. While human settlement in the area dates back thousands of years, including a significant Bronze Age village and Roman occupation, the castle's specific history begins around 1122. The first recorded knight residing there was Rudiger von Hohenberg. Over the centuries, the fortress changed hands multiple times, evolving from a simple stronghold into one of the largest and most robust castles in the region under the guidance of Baroness Katharina Elisabeth von Wechsler, known as Gallerin, between 1637 and 1653.

The castle's strategic importance peaked during the 17th century when the border with the Ottoman Empire lay merely twenty kilometers away. During conflicts with Turkish and Hungarian forces, the massive fortification, surrounded by three kilometers of walls, five gates, and two trenches, provided critical refuge for thousands of local inhabitants. Following the extinction of the Purgstall family line in 1817, Sovereign Johann Josef von Liechtenstein purchased the estate in 1822. It has remained the property of the Princely Family of Liechtenstein ever since, surviving through various historical upheavals, including its capture by Soviet forces in May 1945 during the final days of World War II.

Today, Riegersburg Castle stands complete and well-preserved, serving primarily as a public museum managed by its noble owners. Although the complex contains 108 rooms, twenty-five are currently open to visitors, hosting changing exhibitions that highlight the site's rich military and cultural heritage. The Liechtenstein family resides in a separate house within the town of Riegersburg rather than the castle itself. This historic landmark continues to attract tourists interested in its unique geological foundation, impressive defensive architecture, and its pivotal role as a sanctuary during centuries of regional warfare.
