Burg Neuhaus bei Stubenberg
Burg Neuhaus bei Stubenberg is a renovated castle ruin situated in Stubenberg, Styria, Austria. Perched at an elevation of 553 meters, the structure overlooks the dramatic ravine of the Feistritz river, known locally as the Stubenbergklamm. Classified as a hill castle, its original construction dates back to the mid-14th century, specifically between 1350 and 1375. The fortress was initially established by the House of Stubenberg, with historical records from 1375 explicitly mentioning Hans from Neuhaus. Over the subsequent centuries, ownership transferred to the Drachsler family and later to the Counts of Wurmbrand-Stuppach, who significantly reinforced the defenses in response to threats from the Ottoman Empire.
The site endured a tumultuous history marked by natural disaster and long-term neglect. Around 1800, a lightning strike caused catastrophic damage, destroying much of the complex. Following this event, the castle fell into decay for nearly two hundred years, leaving it almost totally ruined. However, the exceptional thickness and strength of the original medieval walls allowed enough structural substance to survive for future restoration efforts. Today, the property is undergoing a comprehensive revitalization project that has successfully reconstructed the medieval tower house. Standing 32 meters tall, this tower is believed to be the oldest high-rise building in the entire region of Styria.
Currently, work continues on reconstructing two adjoining buildings to restore the castle's former glory. The site has been officially recognized with the Styrian emblem, highlighting its cultural importance to the region. While it began as a strategic military installation during a period of regional instability, Burg Neuhaus now stands as a testament to architectural resilience. Its transformation from a lightning-stricken ruin back into a substantial structure demonstrates a commitment to preserving Austria's historical heritage. The castle remains a significant landmark above the Stubenberg ravine, offering a tangible connection to the area's feudal past and the defensive strategies employed against historical invasions.
