Ravi

Ravi is a historic village located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, specifically within the province of Grosseto. Administratively serving as a frazione of the comune of Gavorrano, it sits atop one of the peaks of Monte Calvo at an elevation of 209 meters. The settlement is strategically positioned along the road connecting Gavorrano to Caldana, approximately two kilometers from its municipal seat and thirty-two kilometers from the city of Grosseto. While primarily a small residential community with a population recorded at 263 in 2001, its elevated location offers a distinct presence within the Maremma landscape.

The historical significance of Ravi dates back to the 8th century when it originated as a property held by the bishops of Roselle. Formerly known as Ravi di Maremma, the village is noted for its medieval castle, which was first mentioned in a document from 784. Over the centuries, the fortress has been fully incorporated into the architecture of the old town center, blending seamlessly with later structures rather than standing as an isolated ruin. This integration highlights the continuous habitation and evolution of the site from a bishopric holding to a cohesive village community.

Architecturally, the village features several notable religious structures that reflect its long history. The main parish church, dedicated to San Leonardo, dates to the 15th century and underwent significant restructuring in 1810. Another key building is the Church of Santa Caterina da Siena, constructed in 1571, which served a religious function until 1930 when it was converted into warehouses and a garage. Today, Ravi remains a preserved historical hamlet where ancient fortifications and Renaissance-era churches coexist within a quiet, rural setting.
