Poeke Castle
Poeke Castle, known locally as Kasteel van Poeke, is a historic fortress located near the small town of Poeke within the municipality of Aalter in East Flanders, Belgium. Situated at an elevation of 15 meters, the estate encompasses 56 hectares of parkland and is distinctively surrounded by water, with access provided by bridges at both the front and rear of the structure. While the exact date of the original fortification remains unknown, historical records reference the site as early as 1139. The castle holds significant military history, having played a prominent role during the 1382 conflict between Count Louis II of Flanders and the city of Ghent. It suffered destruction in 1452 during the Revolt of Ghent when forces loyal to Philip the Good razed the building after retaking it from militia occupants.
The architectural appearance of the castle today is largely the result of extensive renovations carried out in the late nineteenth century. Although rebuilding efforts occurred in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries under the de Preudhomme d'Hailly family, the most transformative work began in 1872 after Baron Victor Pycke de Peteghem purchased the estate. These late nineteenth-century modifications integrated the third storey into a higher roof, renovated the interiors, and converted the former French formal gardens into an English landscape garden. Consequently, hardly any architectural elements predate the 1872 reconstruction, giving the castle its current aesthetic character rather than preserving its medieval or early modern origins.
Following the death of Baroness Ines Pycke de Peteghem, the last resident owner, the castle's ownership shifted dramatically due to her 1951 will. She bequeathed the entire estate to a charitable organization originally known as the National Work of Catholic School Colonies, later renamed Duinen en Heide. This institution utilized the property to provide a refuge for children with behavioral problems during the school year. This transition from a private aristocratic residence to a social care facility marks the most recent chapter in the castle's long and varied history, ensuring its preservation and continued use within the community.
