Nakijin Castle

Nakijin Castle, also known as Hokuzan Castle, is a historic Ryukyuan gusuku fortification situated in the village of Nakijin on the Motobu Peninsula in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Constructed in the early 14th century by the builder Haniji, the structure was crafted primarily from local Ryukyuan limestone and wood. Perched on a dramatic rocky outcropping overlooking the East China Sea, the castle served as the political capital and royal seat for the Kingdom of Hokuzan, one of the three principalities that divided Okinawa Island during the late 14th century. Its strategic location featured steep natural drops to the north and east, providing formidable natural defenses alongside its massive stone walls.

The site holds profound historical significance as a witness to major regional conflicts, including the invasion of Hokuzan in 1416 and the broader Invasion of Ryukyu in 1609, which marked the end of its use as a military stronghold. Following these events, the castle fell into ruin but remains an important cultural landmark. It was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1972 and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as part of the Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu. Today, the property is open to the public, allowing visitors to explore the extensive ruins and learn about the former kings and wardens who once occupied the grounds.

Beyond its military and political past, Nakijin Castle has gained modern fame for its natural beauty, specifically the Hikan cherries that bloom within its walls. These flowers typically blossom between mid-January and early February, making them the first cherry blossoms to open each year in Japan. This unique seasonal event draws numerous tourists to the northern part of Okinawa, blending historical exploration with natural appreciation. The site stands today as a preserved testament to the distinct architectural style and complex history of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
