Iha Castle

Iha Castle, known locally in the Okinawan language as Ifa Gushiku, is a historic Ryukyuan gusuku located in Uruma, Okinawa. Perched dramatically on a cliff that separates the districts of Iha and Ishikawa, the site offers expansive views of the Ishikawa Isthmus. Constructed primarily from Ryukyuan limestone and wood during the early 14th century, the fortress served as a strategic stronghold until approximately the 15th century. It was historically occupied by the Aji of Misato Magiri, a local lord who governed the region under the broader authority of the Ryukyu Kingdom before the area eventually came under Japanese imperial control and later United States administration following World War II.

Today, Iha Castle exists as a designated historic site and ruins, with no original wooden structures remaining intact. Visitors can still explore the enduring stone walls and battlements that define the castle's perimeter, along with the inner bailey which now hosts multiple traditional Ryukyuan shrines known as utaki. To mark its cultural importance, the Okinawa Prefectural government has erected a stone Torii gate near one of the entrances, accompanied by an informational plaque. Although the site has witnessed centuries of political change and conflict, it remains open to the public as a tangible link to the region's feudal past and architectural heritage.

The historical significance of Iha Castle is further underscored by archaeological artifacts discovered on the grounds, which help date its active use to between the 13th and 15th centuries. As one of many gusuku fortifications scattered across the Ryukyu Islands, it represents a unique architectural style distinct from mainland Japanese castles, characterized by its integration with natural limestone formations. While the passage of time has reduced the complex to its foundational elements, the preservation of its walls and sacred shrines ensures that the legacy of the Misato Magiri lords continues to be recognized within modern Okinawa.
