Meadow Brook Hall

Meadow Brook Hall is a magnificent Tudor Revival mansion situated at 350 Estate Drive in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Constructed between 1926 and 1929, the estate was commissioned by Matilda Dodge Wilson, heiress to the Dodge automaker fortune, and her second husband, lumber baron Alfred Wilson. Designed by architect William E. Kapp of the firm Smith, Hinchman & Grylls, the sprawling residence covers 88,000 square feet and contains 110 rooms. This immense scale makes it the fourth largest historic mansion museum in the United States and earns it a place among the prestigious America's Castles. The property originally served as a holiday retreat for Matilda's first husband, automotive tycoon John F. Dodge, before she transformed it into this grand architectural statement at a cost of four million dollars.

The historical significance of Meadow Brook Hall extends beyond its opulent design and connection to early automotive industry wealth. In 1957, Matilda Dodge Wilson donated the mansion along with its surrounding 1,443 acres to the state of Michigan. This generous contribution was specifically intended to fund the establishment of Michigan State University–Oakland, which is now known as Oakland University. The estate preserves elements of its pastoral past, including remnants of a nine-hole golf course added by Dodge that still influence the layout of the current Katke-Cousins course on the grounds.

Today, Meadow Brook Hall operates as a historic house museum and educational resource. Its exceptional preservation and cultural importance were formally recognized when it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012, having previously been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. The site remains a testament to the Gilded Age lifestyle and the philanthropic legacy of the Wilson family, offering visitors a glimpse into the life of one of the wealthiest women of her time while serving as a cornerstone of the local university community.
