Groot-Bijgaarden Castle

Groot-Bijgaarden Castle, known locally as Kasteel van Groot-Bijgaarden or Château de Grand-Bigard, is a historic fortress located in the village of Groot-Bijgaarden within the municipality of Dilbeek, Flemish Brabant, Belgium. Situated at an elevation of 47 meters, the site originally featured a motte-and-bailey structure constructed in the early 12th century for the lords of Bigard. The current brick edifice largely dates from the 17th century, though it underwent extensive restoration between 1902 and the 1930s. This architectural evolution reflects centuries of adaptation, transforming from a medieval defensive outpost into a refined residential estate while maintaining its strategic presence in the region.

The castle possesses a rich and sometimes turbulent history tied to prominent local families. It was initially held by the de Bigard line before passing through marriage to the Rongman family in the 14th century. A particularly dramatic episode occurred in 1546 when the Estor owners, accused of Protestant sympathies and disorderly conduct, were besieged in the keep by royal soldiers. Following a thirty-six-hour standoff that left the tower burning, the occupants surrendered and were subsequently executed, leading to the confiscation of their assets. Over the centuries, ownership transferred to various notable figures, including the powerful financier Gaspard II Schetz, before eventually coming under the stewardship of the House Pelgrims de Bigard.

Today, Groot-Bijgaarden Castle stands in restored condition, serving as a well-preserved example of Belgian heritage architecture. While specific details regarding public access are not universally documented, the property remains a significant landmark owned by the Pelgrims de Bigard family. Its survival through religious conflicts, family extinctions, and structural renovations highlights its resilience and enduring importance to the cultural landscape of Flemish Brabant. The estate continues to represent a tangible link to the area's feudal past and the complex social dynamics that shaped the region over nearly nine hundred years.
