Bouchout Castle

Bouchout Castle, known locally as Kasteel van Bouchout, is a historic fortress located in Meise within the Flemish Brabant province of Belgium. Originally constructed around 1150 by Wouter van Craaynem following the Grimbergen Wars, the site served as a strategic defense point for the young Duchy of Brabant. The most enduring feature from its early history is the square Donjon tower, erected circa 1300 by the knight Daniel van Bouchout. Built primarily from sandstone, the structure has evolved significantly over centuries, transitioning from a rectangular medieval fortification surrounded by a protective pond and drawbridge into a more refined residence.

The architectural identity of the castle reflects a rich timeline of renovations and stylistic shifts. In the late seventeenth century, Peter-Ferdinand Roose transformed the building into a Renaissance château complemented by French ornamental gardens. Following partial destruction during the French Revolution era, Count Amadeus de Beauffort restored the property in 1832, granting it the distinctive neo-Gothic appearance it retains today. Despite suffering periods of disrepair due to conflict and neglect, including damage from iconoclastic fury and Spanish dominance, the castle has been carefully preserved through multiple restorations, with significant work completed between 1987 and 1989.

Historically, the domain is renowned as the final residence of Empress Charlotte of Mexico, who lived there in seclusion from 1879 until her death in 1927 after her husband's execution. Since 1938, the surrounding estate has functioned as the National Botanic Garden of Belgium, now known as the Meise Botanic Garden. Currently owned by the Belgian state, the castle itself is no longer a private residence but serves as a venue for meetings, lectures, and exhibitions, maintaining its status as a culturally significant landmark within the region.
