Giuncarico

Giuncarico is a small village located in Tuscany, central Italy, administratively part of the comune of Gavorrano in the province of Grosseto. Situated at an elevation of 170 meters, the village had a population of 449 as of 2011. It is positioned approximately 25 kilometers from Grosseto and 15 kilometers from Gavorrano, with convenient access via the Via Aurelia highway and the Tirrenica railway line.

The village's history dates back to the Early Middle Ages, when it was controlled by the Aldobrandeschi family and later the Pannocchieschi before being conquered by the Republic of Siena during the 14th century. The defensive walls enclosing Giuncarico have stood since the 11th century, with the Porta del Castello serving as the main gate to the old citadel. The village contains several notable religious and civic structures, including the 13th-century church of Sant'Egidio, which underwent renovations in 1930 and 1960, and the 19th-century Oratory of Santissimo Crocifisso built in 1892. The hermitage of Sant'Ansano from the 17th century now stands in ruins.

Giuncarico's architectural heritage also includes several significant palazzi spanning multiple centuries, such as the 16th-century Palazzo Pretorio, the 15th-century Palazzo Camaiori-Piccolomini, and the 17th-century Palazzo Tedeschini-Camaiori, reflecting the village's prosperous medieval and Renaissance periods.
