Giglio Castello

Giglio Castello is a historic medieval village located on a hill in the center of Giglio Island, within the province of Grosseto in Tuscany, central Italy. Serving as the municipal capital of the comune of Isola del Giglio, it sits at an elevation of 405 meters between the settlements of Giglio Campese and Giglio Porto. Recognized as one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia, or the most beautiful villages in Italy, the site is defined by its ancient atmosphere and strategic position. The village is administratively divided into four distinct quarters known as Casamatta, Centro, Cisterna, and Rocca, maintaining a small residential population that has remained relatively stable over recent decades.

The architectural heritage of Giglio Castello is dominated by impressive fortifications dating back to the 12th century. The most prominent landmark is the Rocca aldobrandesca, a castle originally constructed by the Aldobrandeschi family during the early Middle Ages. This structure was later significantly restructured by the Republic of Pisa following their invasion of the island in the 13th century. Surrounding the entire borough are massive stone walls that have protected the inhabitants for centuries. Within these fortifications stands the main church of San Pietro; while its origins trace back to the 12th century, the building was completely renovated in 1755 and now showcases a distinct Baroque style.

Today, Giglio Castello remains a well-preserved example of medieval urban planning, characterized by its majestic fortress walls and narrow streets. Its historical significance lies in its role as a defensive stronghold against maritime invasions and its continuous habitation since the Middle Ages. The village currently functions as the administrative heart of the island while serving as a key cultural and tourist destination.
