Gallarate

Gallarate is not a castle but a historic city and comune located in the Province of Varese within the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Situated in the Alto Milanese area, it lies approximately ten kilometers from the electric works of Vizzola and is crossed by the Arnetta River within the Ticino Natural Park. While no specific construction date exists for a singular castle structure, the site's fortified history began with foundations laid by the Gauls and later strengthened by the Romans. During the Carolingian conquest of northern-central Italy, a castle was erected upon these original Roman fortifications beside the Basilica of Santa Maria. Although this medieval castle has long since disappeared, its former location is still identified through local topography and a street named Via Postcastello.

The city holds significant historical importance as a strategic hub that rose to prominence after the destruction of Castelseprio in 1287. Following this event, Gallarate became the capital of the vast Seprio county under the rule of the Visconti family. This era marked a prolonged period of prosperity and economic growth that lasted until French rule began in 1498. Historical archives describe Gallarate as a vital center for commercial exchange between Italian and foreign markets, specifically renowned for its trade in cotton, drapes, flax, and textiles. The city also developed a strong textile industry during the early nineteenth century, further cementing its economic legacy in the region.

Today, Gallarate serves as a major railway junction connecting Varese, Laveno, and Arona, with a modern population exceeding fifty-two thousand residents. While the ancient castle no longer stands, the city preserves its rich heritage through landmarks like the Church of San Pietro and the Basilica of Santa Maria. The urban landscape reflects layers of history ranging from ancient Roman settlements to medieval expansion and industrial development. As part of the Milan metropolitan area, it remains an active community that honors its origins as a key administrative and commercial center of the Seprio county while functioning as a contemporary hub for transport and residence in Lombardy.
