Crom Castle

Crom Castle is a historic country house situated on the shores of Upper Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Serving as the traditional seat of the Earls Erne, the current structure was completed in 1840 and designed by the renowned English architect Edward Blore. Built from stone, the residence features a central battlemented tower housing the main entrance, flanked by smaller towers. It stands within the expansive 1,900-acre Crom Estate, which includes formal gardens and is distinct from the nearby ruins of Old Crom Castle. The site is also notable for hosting two ancient yew trees believed to be at least 800 years old, adding to its atmospheric landscape.

The location holds deep historical significance dating back to the early 17th century Plantation of Ulster, when the first house was constructed by Scottish planter Michael Balfour. The original fortress famously withstood two Jacobite sieges in 1689 during the Williamite War before being destroyed by a domestic fire in 1764. In modern times, the estate underwent a major transition when the 6th Earl of Erne transferred management to the National Trust in 1987. While the castle itself remains the private property of the 7th Earl of Erne, it is available for hire, and the grounds are open to the public. The estate continues to serve as a cultural hub, having hosted historic yacht regattas and maintaining unique local traditions, including an Orange Order lodge based in the former laundry building.
