Castle of Mau Vizinho

The Castle of Mau Vizinho, also known as the Castle of the Moors or literally the Castle of the Bad Neighbour, is a medieval fortification located in the civil parish of Cimo de Vila da Castanheira within the municipality of Chaves, in the Vila Real district of northern Portugal. Owned by the Portuguese Republic and open to the public, the structure is constructed primarily from local granite and schist. While often associated with medieval times due to ceramic fragments found on-site, its exact construction date remains undefined in historical records. The site holds a unique place in local lore as it was traditionally believed to be a pre-Roman sanctuary, although it lacks the typical ritual altars found at similar regional sites like Panóias.

Archaeological interest in the ruins began in the late 1960s and early 1970s under the direction of António da Eira e Costa. This initial discovery led to a series of significant excavations between 1981 and 1989, conducted by teams including Adérito Medeiros Freitas and Joaquim Rodrigues dos Santos Junior. These efforts focused on clearing debris and investigating the layout of the structure, ultimately revealing artifacts such as medieval ceramics and specific clay tiles. Due to the historical value uncovered during these surveys, the site was officially classified as a Property of Public Interest by government decree on January 3, 1986.

Despite the absence of definitive architectural dating, the possibility of a pre-Roman cultural origin remains a subject of academic assumption, pending further research. The castle stands today as a protected historical monument representing the layered history of the Alto Trás-os-Montes region. Its condition reflects its status as an archaeological site rather than a fully preserved building, offering visitors a glimpse into the ancient past of Chaves. The ongoing mystery regarding its original purpose, swinging between theories of a defensive medieval castle and an ancient sacred space, adds to its intrigue for historians and tourists alike.
