Castle of Castelo Branco

The Castle of Castelo Branco, locally known as the Castelo dos Templários, is a medieval fortress situated on a hilltop overlooking the civil parish and municipality of Castelo Branco in Portugal's Centro Region. Constructed primarily from granite and iron, this Romanesque structure was built under the orders of King Afonso II in 1214. Its origins are deeply rooted in the Reconquista, as the territory was initially conquered from the Moors in 1165 and donated to the Knights Templar. Although land control shifted briefly in 1198, the site was fully bequeathed to the Order of the Temple by 1214, a transfer later confirmed by a papal bull from Innocent III. This strategic location allowed the Templars to extend their defensive line connecting key strongholds like Tomar, Monsanto, and Almourol.

Historically, the castle served as a vital military installation during the 13th century. The initial fortification walls were erected between 1214 and 1230, and during this period, D. Simão Mendes, the Master of the Knights Templar, commissioned a palace for the order's commanders. By the reign of King Denis at the end of the 13th century, the complex had expanded to include four distinct gates, reflecting its growing importance as a regional stronghold.
