Castle of Fossa

The Castle of Fossa, known locally as Castello di Fossa, is a medieval fortress situated in the village of Fossa within the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of southern Italy. Perched on the eastern slope of Mount Circolo at the highest point of the settlement, the structure dates back to the early 12th century. It stands as a prime example of encastellation, a historical phenomenon where fortified centers were established to protect growing populations. The castle originally functioned as an enclosure castle, featuring a central keep surrounded by a trapezoidal fortified wall that contained the earliest houses of the village before subsequent development expanded beyond its perimeter.

Architecturally, the site is defined by a prominent circular tower standing 17 meters tall with an 8-meter diameter, which likely originates from the 12th or 13th century. This main keep was accessible only via an internal staircase and connected to the surrounding walls by a drawbridge. The defensive enclosure, probably constructed in the late 13th or early 14th century, consists of thick stone walls reaching up to 10 meters in height, topped with a chemin de ronde for patrols. Four square towers reinforce the structure, with two serving dual purposes as residential spaces. Access was granted through a pointed stone arch on the northeast wall and a secondary entrance near the southwest tower.

Today, the Castle of Fossa remains a significant historical landmark representing the military architecture of the Middle Ages in the Aterno Valley. While it shares typological similarities with nearby fortresses such as those in San Pio delle Camere and Bominaco, it retains unique features regarding its tower configuration and layout. Although the site is not currently open to the general public, it persists as a testament to the region's feudal history and defensive strategies. The fortress continues to dominate the local skyline, preserving the memory of the original village core that once thrived within its protective stone bounds.
