Castle of Barisciano

The Castle of Barisciano, known locally as Castello di Barisciano, is a medieval fortress located in the town of Barisciano within the province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of southern Italy. Perched at an elevation of 1,500 meters on Mount Selva, the structure was originally established around the 8th century to guard the village and control access to the Gran Sasso d'Italia and the Navelli plateau. While its origins date back to the early Middle Ages, the castle underwent significant expansion during the 13th century. It was transformed into a large enclosure castle designed to shelter the local population during times of danger, reflecting the turbulent security needs of the era.

Historically, the site played a pivotal role in regional politics, contributing to the founding of the nearby city of L'Aquila. Its strategic importance led to its destruction on April 23, 1424, when the condottiero Braccio da Montone attacked and razed the fortification during a siege. Although it remained under the jurisdiction of L'Aquila until 1529, the castle eventually became a fief for various aristocratic families. By the 16th century, it lost its military utility and was largely abandoned. Today, the site stands as a historical ruin, though it retains cultural significance through the adjacent Church of Saint Roch, built in 1526 to commemorate a local epidemic and housing religious art within one of the old towers.

Architecturally, the castle is defined by its massive rectangular enclosure, which boasts a perimeter of approximately one kilometer. The defensive layout originally featured eight towers positioned along the curtain walls, with a distinctive pentagonal tower situated at the highest apex. While the main fortifications are no longer inhabited, remnants of internal buildings still exist within the walls. The sheer scale of the enclosure highlights its former function as a refuge for the community rather than just a military garrison. Despite centuries of neglect following its abandonment, the Castle of Barisciano remains a notable landmark representing the defensive heritage of the Abruzzo mountains.
