Castle of Castro Marim

The Castle of Castro Marim is a medieval fortress situated on a hilltop in the Algarve region of Portugal, overlooking the civil parish of Castro Marim within the Faro district. Strategically positioned near the mouth of the Guadiana River and local salt pans, the site commands a unique landscape that has facilitated human settlement since ancient times. While the current stone and masonry structure incorporates limestone and red shale, the location's history extends back to 854 BCE, with successive occupations by Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians before the establishment of a Neolithic castro.
