Castle of Alcoutim (Old)

The Old Castle of Alcoutim, known locally as Castelo Velho de Alcoutim, is a significant medieval fortress situated in the civil parish of Alcoutim within the Faro district of the Algarve region in Portugal. Located approximately one kilometer north of the modern town of Alcoutim, this military structure was originally constructed during the 8th or 9th century. It stands as one of the most important Islamic military installations in the Algarve, offering critical insights into the Muslim occupation of the southern Iberian Peninsula. The site is owned by the Portuguese Republic and remains open to the public, serving as both a historical landmark for tourists and a key subject for archaeological study.

Although the castle dates to the early medieval period, the location itself holds much deeper historical roots, having been occupied since the Bronze Age as part of a prehistoric castro settlement. The specific choice of this elevated site, rather than the town below, was likely driven by its superior visibility and strategic control over the surrounding territory.
