Castle of Avis

The Castle of Avis is a medieval military installation located in the civil parish of Avis, within the municipality of the same name in the Portalegre district of Portugal's Alentejo region. Situated on a prominent hilltop, the structure was originally commissioned in 1211 by King Afonso II, who granted the lands to the Knights of Évora with the specific condition that they settle the area and erect a fortress. Construction began shortly thereafter under the leadership of Master-Prior Fernão Anes and Master Fernando Rodrigues Monteiro, utilizing local materials such as schist, limestone, sand, clay, and dirt to create a durable defensive complex.

Historically, the castle served as the foundational seat for the Military Order of São Bento, later known as the Order of Avis, which became one of the most influential knightly orders in Portuguese history. The site received significant royal attention early in its existence, including a royal charter granted in 1215 and confirmed in 1218, which helped solidify the town's legal and economic standing. Throughout the centuries, the fortress underwent various modifications, most notably during the 15th century when Condestável D. Pedro ordered extensive rehabilitation works. This period saw the addition of crucial defensive elements, including the construction of a keep, ensuring the castle remained a viable stronghold during times of conflict and political shifts involving Moorish officials and local governance.

Today, the Castle of Avis is owned by the Portuguese Republic and managed by the DRCAlentejo cultural heritage department. Although portions of the original towers and gates remain visible on the hilltop, the structure reflects centuries of use and adaptation. It stands as a testament to the military and religious history of the region, marking the origins of the Order of Avis that played a pivotal role in the nation's development. The site is currently open to the public, allowing visitors to explore the remnants of its medieval past and understand its strategic importance in the borderlands of historical Portugal.
