Castello Sannazzaro di Giarole

Castello Sannazzaro di Giarole is a historic fortress located in the small village of Giarole within the Province of Alessandria in the Piedmont region of Italy. While the Sannazzaro family received imperial privileges from Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I in 1163 to construct fortifications, the current structure evolved significantly between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. The building underwent major modifications during the eighteenth century, specifically around 1780, and saw further restoration in the 1850s. These later renovations introduced Neo-Gothic architectural elements to the north and west wings, blending medieval origins with nineteenth-century aesthetic trends. The expansive estate covers over one hundred thousand square feet, featuring forty-five rooms and extensive gardens that include a Catholic chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The castle holds considerable historical significance as a residence that has hosted numerous monarchs and dignitaries throughout the centuries. Notable guests include the Marquesses and Dukes of Montferrat, King Charles Emmanuel IV of Sardinia in 1745, and both Emperor Napoleon III and King Victor Emmanuel II in 1859. The on-site chapel houses a statue of the Virgin of the Rosary, which is central to an annual procession dating back to 1571. Despite its age and noble past, the property has remained continuously owned by the Sannazzaro family. Since 1986, Count Giuseppe Sannazzaro has managed the estate, adapting it for modern use while preserving its heritage.

Today, Castello Sannazzaro operates as a bed and breakfast, offering visitors a chance to stay within a genuine medieval setting. The castle recently gained international attention when Count Sannazzaro's daughter, Ludovica, launched a popular social media presence documenting daily life in the ancient home. This modern exposure has highlighted the unique experience of living in a nine-hundred-year-old family seat that balances historical preservation with contemporary hospitality. The site stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Sannazzaro lineage and the architectural evolution of Piedmontese nobility.
