Castello di Amorosa

Castello di Amorosa is a distinctive winery and tourist attraction located near Calistoga in California's Napa Valley. Although the facility officially opened to the public in April 2007, its first vintage dates back to 2001. The project was spearheaded by Dario Sattui, a fourth-generation vintner who also operates the historic V. Sattui Winery. The property holds historical significance as it was once part of an estate owned by Edward Turner Bale before Sattui purchased the 171-acre site in 1993. Following the acquisition, construction began in 1995 on a massive undertaking that would eventually cost approximately forty million dollars to complete the castle, outbuildings, and internal winery facilities.

The structure is renowned for its authentic 13th-century Tuscan architectural style, meticulously designed to resemble a medieval Italian castle. Sattui utilized traditional methods and imported materials, including hand-hewn stone and ancient bricks from Italy, to ensure historical accuracy. The complex features over one hundred rooms, including a great hall, chapel, torture chamber, and armory, making it a unique landmark that blends viticulture with immersive history. This dedication to detail distinguishes it from typical modern wineries, offering visitors a tangible connection to old-world European traditions within the American landscape.

Today, Castello di Amorosa functions as a fully operational winery producing around 16,000 cases annually. It specializes in Italian varietals such as Sangiovese, Barbera, and Pinot Grigio, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, with its signature wine being the Il Barone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The castle remains in pristine condition and is open to the public for tours and tastings, serving as both a production facility and a cultural destination. Through this ambitious project, Sattui realized a century-old family dream of establishing a grand estate that honors his Italian heritage while contributing to the rich tapestry of Napa Valley's wine country.
