Lookout Mountain Castle

Lookout Mountain Castle, officially known as the Cavern Castle and serving as the visitors center for Ruby Falls, is situated on Scenic Highway in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Constructed in 1929 by architect Leo B. Lambert and the Brown Contracting Co., this structure acts as the gateway to one of the region's most famous natural attractions. The building and its surrounding ten-acre site were recognized for their historical value when added to the National Register of Historic Places in November 1985. Architecturally, the castle was designed to complement the mystical nature of the underground attractions it houses, providing a grand entrance for tourists visiting Lookout Mountain.

The site is historically significant for its connection to Ruby Falls, an eighty-five-foot subterranean waterfall located deep within Lookout Mountain Cave. Discovered during the excavation of the cave system intended for commercial tourism, the waterfall is fed by meteoric water percolating through limestone formed hundreds of millions of years ago. The cave features impressive geological formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone. To make these natural wonders accessible, developers installed electric lighting, paved foot trails, and an elevator, creating a unique commercialized cave experience that has operated continuously since the early twentieth century.

Today, the Cavern Castle remains in active use as the primary hub for guided tours, which are the only method allowed for visiting the waterfall. The facility manages access to the connected cave systems, including the upper Ruby Falls Cave and the lower Lookout Mountain Cave, which were joined by developers to create a comprehensive tour route. While the underground environment showcases ancient geological history from the Carboniferous Period, the castle above ground stands as a enduring landmark of Chattanooga's tourism industry, preserving the legacy of Leo Lambert's vision while accommodating modern visitors seeking to explore the hidden depths of the mountain.
