Poppi Castle, also known as Castello dei Conti Guidi, is a prominent medieval fortress located in the town of Poppi within the Tuscany region of Italy. Constructed primarily of sandstone around 1290, the structure stands on a site that likely held earlier fortifications, with its first written mention dating back to 1169. The castle is renowned for its architectural significance, as it is widely believed to have been designed by Arnolfo di Cambio. He reportedly used this building as a prototype for the famous Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Key features include a tall tower originally equipped with machicolations for defense, elegant mullioned windows added in the late thirteenth century, and a magnificent stone grand staircase built in 1470 that leads to an inner courtyard adorned with historic coats of arms.

Historically, the castle served as the seat of the powerful Guidi family, who controlled the Casentino valley for over three centuries. It was a central stage for regional conflicts, most notably the Battle of Campaldino in 1289, where the Ghibelline forces allied with Poppi were defeated by the Florentine Guelphs. Legend suggests that the poet Dante Alighieri participated in this battle on the winning side. Despite this defeat, the Guidi family retained rule until the fifteenth century. The interior also houses the Guidi Chapel, which features valuable frescoes painted by Taddeo Gaddi, a pupil of Giotto. Although lightning struck the tower in the nineteenth century, leading to some remodeling, the structure has remained intact through the ages.

Today, the castle is owned by the Commune of Poppi and remains in occupied condition, serving as a well-preserved landmark that attracts visitors interested in Tuscan history and architecture. Its enduring presence offers a tangible link to the medieval and Renaissance periods of Italy, showcasing the evolution from a purely military stronghold to a refined noble residence. The combination of its strategic past, artistic interiors, and architectural lineage makes it a significant cultural site in the heart of Tuscany.
