Castel Goffredo

Castel Goffredo is a municipality located in the province of Mantua in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, situated approximately 35 kilometers from Mantua and near Brescia. The town lies in a region rich with natural springs at the foot of slopes that drain toward Lake Garda and the Po Valley plains. The area covers 42.4 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 12,678 residents as of 2018.

The settlement has deep historical roots, with evidence of habitation dating back to the Bronze Age. From the ninth century until 1115, Castel Goffredo was controlled by the count-bishops of Brescia before establishing itself as a commune. Seeking protection, the municipality placed itself under the control of Mantua and the powerful House of Gonzaga in 1337. The territory subsequently came under Visconti rule from Milan between 1348 and 1404 before returning to Gonzaga governance in 1441. A significant turning point occurred in 1511 when marquis Aloysio Gonzaga established Castel Goffredo as the seat of an autonomous fiefdom. The subsequent division of his estates among his sons led to internal conflict, including the assassination of Alfonso Gonzaga in 1592 and his murderer in 1593, which sparked a popular uprising that restored local communal governance. The territory was eventually annexed by the duchy of Milan in 1603.
