Burgruine Rosegg

Schloss Rosegg, often referred to in historical contexts alongside the nearby Burgruine Rosegg, is a prominent estate located in the municipality of Rosegg in Carinthia, Austria. Situated approximately 478 meters above sea level near Lake Wörthersee, the site originally hosted a medieval hilltop fort known as Altrosegg, constructed during the twelfth or thirteenth century. The current mansion replaced this ancient structure in 1772, commissioned by Prince Franz Seraph von Orsini-Rosenberg. Designed with distinct Italianate architectural influences, the building retains much of its original eighteenth-century furniture, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the period's domestic life and noble aesthetics.

The property possesses a colorful history involving various notable owners following its construction. After the founding prince, it was briefly owned by Peter Ritter von Bohr, an acquaintance of Emperor Francis II, whose tenure lasted only two years due to his conviction for producing counterfeit money. In 1831, Johann I Joseph, Prince of Liechtenstein, purchased the estate for one of his sons, establishing a lineage of ownership that continues with descendants of the House of Liechtenstein to this day. This long-standing aristocratic connection has helped preserve the castle's historical integrity and cultural significance within the region.

Currently, Schloss Rosegg serves as a vibrant cultural hub and tourist destination rather than a private residence or military installation. It features an extensive wildlife park and zoo, a large hedge maze, and guided tours showcasing life-size wax figures dressed in period clothing. Beyond its historical exhibits, the grounds host contemporary art exhibitions, summer events, concerts, and theater programs. With an on-site cafe and diverse recreational activities, the castle successfully blends its rich heritage with modern entertainment, making it a unique attraction for both history enthusiasts and families visiting Carinthia.
