Designed primarily by architect Giovanni Pietro de Pomis for the powerful House of Eggenberg, the palace features a central tower rising 50 meters and covers a floor area of 8,000 square meters. Its construction involved substantial investment, costing over 105,000 guilders during its primary development phase in the seventeenth century.

The palace holds immense historical significance as a testament to the patronage and influence of the Eggenberg dynasty, once the mightiest family in Styria. In 1999, the City of Graz Historic Centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and this listing was expanded in 2010 to explicitly include Schloss Eggenberg, recognizing it as a vital cultural treasure of Austria. The site preserves centuries of history through its architectural design and original accouterments, which were largely completed by 1685, with further interior refinements added by 1762. Currently owned by the State of Styria and managed under the Universalmuseum Joanneum, the palace serves as a major cultural hub.
