Burg Schattenburg
Schattenburg is a well-preserved medieval castle situated in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg, Austria, standing approximately 480 meters above sea level. Constructed around the year 1200 by Hugo I of Montfort, the founder of Feldkirch, the fortress served as the residence for the Dukes of Montfort until 1390. Following this period, ownership transferred to the powerful House of Habsburg before the city of Feldkirch purchased the property in 1825 for a sum equivalent to eight tournament horses. The name Schattenburg is believed to derive from old Germanic roots meaning protection or shield, reflecting its original defensive purpose. Despite enduring various conflicts and sustaining damage over the centuries, continuous renovation efforts have maintained its structural integrity, earning it recognition as one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Central Europe.
Today, the site functions as a vibrant cultural hub featuring a museum and a restaurant. The museum occupies eighteen rooms across three floors, each dedicated to specific aspects of Feldkirch's local history, guiding visitors through different eras. Exhibits include an impressive collection of weapons ranging from the Middle Ages up to World War II. The castle remains open to the public and attracts significant tourism, with visitor numbers exceeding 30,000 in 2017 alone. Its dual role as a historical monument and a functional venue with dining options makes it a central landmark for both residents and travelers exploring the Vorarlberg region.
