Burg Hochosterwitz
Burg Hochosterwitz is a historic rock castle located in Carinthia, Austria, near the town of Sankt Georgen am Längsee. Perched atop a 172-meter-high dolomite rock at an elevation of 664 meters above sea level, the fortress dominates the surrounding Zollfeld plain and is visible from up to 30 kilometers away on clear days. First mentioned in an 860 deed issued by King Louis the German under the name Astarwiza, the site has served as a settlement since the Bronze Age. The current structure's origins trace back to the Osterwitz noble dynasty, with the castle evolving through centuries of ownership changes involving the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the House of Sponheim before eventually coming under the control of the Khevenhüller noble family.
Recognized as one of Austria's most impressive medieval castles, Burg Hochosterwitz features distinctive military architecture designed to withstand sieges. Its historical significance is highlighted by a famous legend from the 14th century involving Countess Margaret of Tyrol, whose troops were allegedly tricked into believing the castle had abundant supplies when the garrison threw a grain-filled ox over the wall. This act of psychological warfare reportedly caused the besieging army to withdraw. The castle has been meticulously restored over time and remains in excellent condition, serving as a prominent state landmark and a major tourist attraction that draws visitors from around the world.
Today, the castle is owned by the Khevenhüller family and is open to the public annually from April through October. It stands as a testament to medieval engineering and strategic defense, offering guests a glimpse into the region's rich cultural heritage. The site preserves its historical integrity while functioning as a key destination for those interested in Austrian history and architecture.
