Binasco Castle

The Visconti Castle of Binasco is a medieval fortress located in the town of Binasco within the Metropolitan City of Milan, Lombardy, in Northern Italy. Constructed primarily of exposed brick during the early 14th century, likely between 1315 and 1319, it was commissioned by Luchino Visconti, the Lord of Milan. The structure exemplifies the classic Visconti castle model found across the Lombard plains, featuring a quadrangular layout with a central courtyard, corner towers, and a surrounding moat. Although the castle suffered significant damage from sacking during the Napoleonic era and a devastating fire in 1869, repeated restorations have successfully preserved its original architectural appearance, with two towers still visible along the south front today.

Historically, the site served as a strategic prison for political opponents under the rule of Azzone and Giovanni Visconti as early as 1329. However, its most infamous moment occurred in 1418 when Beatrice di Tenda, the Duchess of Milan and wife of Filippo Maria Visconti, was arrested, sentenced to death for alleged adultery, and executed within the castle walls. This tragic event remains a central part of the location's legacy, commemorated by a plaque on the premises. Despite these turbulent past events and periods of decay, the building has maintained good structural condition through centuries of maintenance and reconstruction efforts.

Currently, the castle is owned jointly by the Municipality of Binasco and the Province of Milan. It has been repurposed for civic use and is open to the public, housing various municipal functions including the town council offices, the public library, and a local Carabinieri police station. This adaptive reuse ensures the historic landmark remains an active and integral part of the community while preserving its cultural significance for visitors interested in Lombard history and medieval architecture.
