Montorgiali
wikipedia

Montorgiali is a small historic village located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, administratively serving as a frazione of the comune of Scansano within the province of Grosseto. Situated on a hill along the Scansanese Provincial Road, the settlement stands approximately 330 meters above sea level. It is positioned roughly 21 kilometers from the city of Grosseto and 10 kilometers from Scansano. As of the 2011 census, the village had a population of 162 residents, known as Montorgialesi, maintaining its status as a quiet, rural community within the Maremma area.

The village is defined by its medieval heritage, most notably the Castle of Montorgiali, which dates back to the 12th century and serves as the main palace of the settlement. This fortress shares its historical era with the primary parish church, San Biagio, also constructed during the 12th century. Another significant religious site is the Sanctuary of San Giorgio, an ancient pieve from the Middle Ages. This sanctuary is dedicated to Saint George and is steeped in local legend regarding the saint's mythical defeat of a dragon, adding a layer of folklore to the site's spiritual importance.

Today, Montorgiali remains a preserved example of Tuscan hilltop architecture, where the castle and churches form the core of the village's main sights. While specific details regarding modern renovations or current private usage of the castle are not extensively documented in available records, the structure persists as a central landmark alongside the active religious buildings. The village continues to function as a residential community that honors its long history, offering visitors a glimpse into the medieval past of the Grosseto province through its enduring stone structures and scenic landscape.
