Beersel Castle

Beersel Castle, known locally as Kasteel van Beersel, is a remarkably preserved medieval water castle situated in Beersel, Flemish Brabant, Belgium. Originally constructed between 1300 and 1310 under the authority of the Duchy of Brabant, the fortress was rebuilt in 1357 following its destruction during the War of the Brabant Succession. The structure is architecturally distinct for being built largely of brick, a rare material for major fortifications of that era, and features a circular enceinte dominated by three massive towers. Its strategic location near the frontier with the County of Hainaut made it a critical defensive point south-west of Brussels, serving as one of several key Brabantine strongholds in the region.

The castle possesses a turbulent history marked by military conflict and adaptation. It was sacked twice by Brussels militias in the late 15th century during revolts against Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, suffering significant damage from cannon fire. Subsequent restorations in 1491 modified the towers to accommodate artillery, though the site eventually lost its military function to become a private residence in the 16th century. After falling into disrepair and briefly housing a cotton factory in the early 19th century, the property passed through various noble families before undergoing a comprehensive restoration between 1928 and 1939 that returned it to its former glory.

Today, Beersel Castle is owned by the Royal Association of Historic Residences and Gardens in Belgium and stands as one of the best-preserved castles in the country. Unlike many similar structures that were heavily altered or demolished over the centuries, Beersel retains much of its original medieval character thanks to careful conservation efforts. It is currently open to the public, allowing visitors to explore its historic brickwork, imposing towers, and the surrounding grounds that reflect centuries of Belgian heritage and architectural evolution.
