Zhovkva Castle stands prominently in the principal square of Zhovkva, Ukraine, serving as a monumental example of Renaissance architecture with distinct Serlian influences. Founded by Polish Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski, construction of this fortified residence began in 1594 and was largely completed by 1606. The original complex featured a grand entrance arch, wide protective moats, and functional wings housing an arsenal and stables. A unique feature of the estate was its elaborate garden, established in 1606, which included a menagerie containing wisents, deer, and chamois. The palatine chapel within the grounds was later consecrated in 1640, adding to the site's religious and cultural importance.

The castle reached its golden age in the late 17th century after passing through inheritance to the Sobieski family. It became the residence of King Jan III Sobieski, a native of the town, who famously celebrated his historic victory at the Battle of Vienna within these walls. During the 18th century, the facade was adorned with statues honoring the prominent Zolkiewski, Daniłowicz, Sobieski, and Radziwill families. However, following the partition of Poland, the structure fell into disuse and was eventually auctioned off. The 19th century saw significant alterations, including the dismantling of the chapel to make room for a local school, while further damage occurred during the First World War.

Although some restoration efforts were undertaken prior to the Second World War, the castle required extensive repairs after the conflict ended. Today, the site remains a key historical landmark in the Lviv Oblast, reflecting centuries of Polish and Ukrainian heritage. While parts of the original structure were lost or repurposed over time, the castle continues to stand as a testament to the region's turbulent history and architectural evolution. Its legacy is preserved through ongoing recognition of its status as a former royal residence and a central element of Zhovkva's urban landscape.
