Yahilnytsia Castle

Yahilnytsia Castle is a historic fortress located in the village of Nahirianka near Yahilnytsia within the Chortkiv Raion of Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. Originally constructed as a wooden stronghold at the end of the 15th century, it was rebuilt in brick at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries by Stanisław Lanckoroński, a prominent Polish noble and military leader. The structure sits atop a high, steep hill, utilizing skillful bastion fortifications that once made it an impregnable defensive position. Its architecture included residential quarters, outbuildings, and a guarded entrance featuring a bridge over a deep ditch, with the Lanckoroński family coat of arms displayed above the gate.

The castle holds significant historical value due to its turbulent past during the Polish-Ottoman wars and Cossack uprisings. It successfully resisted a Cossack invasion in 1648 but fell to treachery in 1655. During the late 17th century, the site changed hands multiple times between Polish forces and the Ottoman Empire, serving briefly as the seat of an Ottoman commander before being permanently recaptured by Polish troops in 1683. Following the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, the fortress was restored and resumed its role as the Lanckoroński family residence.

In 1817, the property was sold to the Austrian government, which converted the historic site into a large tobacco factory that operated intermittently until the 1990s. Since 2000, the castle has been under private ownership. Today, it is recognized as an architectural monument of local importance. While specific details regarding its current physical condition are limited in available records, the site remains a notable landmark representing centuries of military and industrial history in western Ukraine.
