The Vilnius Castle Complex is a historic group of structures situated on the left bank of the Neris River near its confluence with the Vilnia River in Vilnius, Lithuania. Originally evolving between the 10th and 18th centuries, the site served as one of the nation's primary defensive systems. The complex historically comprised three distinct fortifications: the Upper Castle, the Lower Castle, and the Crooked Castle. Constructed using a combination of stone, bricks, and wood, these buildings reflect architectural developments spanning nearly a millennium, transitioning from early wooden fortifications in the 10th century to robust stone walls and towers by the 13th century.

Historically significant for its resilience, the complex withstood numerous attacks by the Teutonic Order, although the Crooked Castle was destroyed in 1390 and never rebuilt. The entire site was first captured during the Battle of Vilnius in 1655, after which its military importance declined significantly. Subsequent centuries saw further damage during fortress construction in the 19th century and demolitions under Tsarist rule. Despite this destruction, the remaining Gediminas Tower stands as a powerful national symbol, where the Lithuanian flag is hoisted annually on January 1 to commemorate Flag Day.

Today, the surviving elements of the complex are integrated into the National Museum of Lithuania, serving as a major cultural attraction rather than a military installation. The site is also a key component of the Vilnius Old Town, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 for its outstanding universal value. While much of the original infrastructure exists only as ruins or foundations, the complex remains a testament to the region's turbulent history and enduring heritage, attracting visitors interested in its archaeological depth and role in Lithuanian statehood.
